Why Choose Mountain View Cemetery

Reason to Choose Us

MOUNTAIN VIEW CEMETERY

Mountain View Cemetery Association, a community nonprofit organization, has been a part of California history since its founding in 1863. Two years later, the first Mountain View families were interred. Our lush gardens and panoramic views have provided solace to families and the community ever since.

Choosing a place to memorialize your family name is a decision that lasts for generations. The Cemetery is a place for commemoration and solitude as well as enjoyment. Families are inspired to come to Mountain View Cemetery for historical and practical reasons.

History

The Cemetery layout was originally planned by the founder of landscape architecture, Frederick Law Olmsted. Early pioneers of northern California wanted a distinguished cemetery for memorial. For more about history, visit our history page.

Not-For-Profit

The Cemetery is a nonsectarian, nonprofit community association. It is guided by trustees who own property within the Cemetery and who are leaders in our community, not by dividend earning shareholders. The Cemetery is maintained, in part, by an endowment fund and operated for the benefit of the community. The Association relies on services to the community and private donations and earnings are 100% reinvested to ensure that Mountain View is preserved for posterity.

Endowment Care Fund

A cemetery is intended to last in perpetuity. One of the most important questions to ask any cemetery is, “What is the value of your Endowment Care Fund?” Our Cemetery Fund at the end of 2013 was valued at $42M. In accordance with California State law, earnings are restricted funds for cemetery maintenance and embellishments only.

Community

Mountain View Cemetery provides a variety of uses, beyond memorialization. We offer open hours for visitors at no charge. When you invest in Mountain View Cemetery, in addition to caring for family, you help to sustain a historical and cultural park like resource that brings joy and to all who walk, bike, sketch, photograph, and contemplate on our grounds.
